The most popular archive formats for digital distribution of comic books are CBR and CBZ. They are extremely popular on the Internet but they require a special reader such as Comical – a free, open source program for reading comic strips. The program is based on C++.
It is a very efficient and versatile reader that allows us to open archives and move within them by means of a comfortable miniature toolbar which displays the adjacent pages. Because the program’s code is based on C++ and wxWidgets, and because the program is of an open source nature, it is lightweight, efficient and user-friendly. There are plenty of options for viewing comic books that the user may adjust to their own needs and, for instance, view the book page by page or in the two-up option. Every single page may be adjusted to the size of the screen. The quality of graphics is excellent thanks to using theFreeImage project.
The program’s interface is well-designed and very intuitive. This comfort combined with efficiency allows us to quickly view the archive’s content as Comical saves the adjacent pages in the background so they are displayed immediately. However, the program requires installation so it cannot be used as a portable CBR and CBZ reader. But still, it constitutes an excellent solution.
