Office package is an indispensable software element for everyone, whether an entrepreneur, a student, or a freelance. OpenOffice.org is a successor of StarOffice published in 2000 and a free competitor of Microsoft Office, offering exactly the same functions but being also compatible with some competitive platforms and operating systems.

OpenOffice.org is based on the Java and Python languages and offers the same options as Microsoft Office, but for free. OpenOffice.org includes Writer program for writing and processing documents, Calc for creating and editing spreadsheets, Base for running databases, Impress for multimedia presentations, Draw for creating pictures, charts and graphics, and Math for mathematical formulae and equations. These six programs are in fact six functions of the same application. The package works as a whole and in order to open a new spreadsheet, a document or a database, we have to choose the right option form the program’s menu.

Please note that although OpenOffice.org offers the same functions as Microsoft Office, it is designed it a slightly different way so that a person who only starts using OpenOffice.org will need some time to get used to a slightly different interface and structure.
However, this does not change the fact that OpenOffice.org is an excellent alternative to Microsoft Office, the more so that it does not require any payments or authentication. Whoever installs the package, whether a businessman or a student, OpenOffice.org was, still is, and will remain free as a collective effort of a large number of volunteers supported by such companies as Oracle, RedFlag CH2000 and IBM.
