Dictionaries – we should definitely use them more in our everyday life. We usually associate them with huge books containing boring definitions. Everyone of us must have used them at some point and they are not very popular among us (there is only a small group of people who actually like using them). Fortunately, however, together with the advent of the Internet era, collecting information has become much easier and using dictionaries – more pleasant. A good example of tool which facilitates data gathering is GoldenDict.

What is it? To put it simply, it is a tool for automatic data colleting and searching for definition of a given entry. GoldenDict finds this entry using a wide database connected to the Internet services such as Wikipedia or Wiktionary, and its function can be extended with files and dictionaries installed by the user on the hard disk (for instance .BGL files of the Babylon program with their graphic images and resources, StarDict .ifo, .dict and .idx, Dictd .index and .dict, as well as sound  sources and archives of the Lingvo program. Besides, the application also enables us to use the external program to perform certain functions like playing sounds or simulating voice.

Its interface is easy and user-friendly. It really doesn’t take much time to find its options and set resources. The user may customize its aspects, setting the text and punctuation, the option of recognizing accents (for instance in German), etc. The program is universal and compatible with Linux and Windows and is free from any charges.
