Named after one of the first poplar 3D games, that is Quake created by id Software, Quake Army Knife is not only intended for only this game. It is a tool for creating 3D models for computer games while using engines based on the ones created by id Software (and called id Tech) or having a similar architecture. These are engines like Source, Genesis 3D, Torque or Sylphis3D.
The program is a GLP-licensed, open source tool enabling the user to import and edit the already existing models as well as create new ones. It is a very versatile application: there are wide opportunities for manipulating the models and this is not the only option. Also, the program offers the possibility of converting and editing elements such as textures, sound or light effects. The program also includes an advanced level editor whose most important function is editing map fragments without the need for another compilation, which saves a lot of time. The program does not compile maps by itself but uses external programs for this. Its interface controls these programs, memorizing all the settings.
Its interface is user-friendly, even for a beginner. Its aspects can be customized and the user may chose the method of displaying level or model previews by means of one of the in-built rendering modules (program module, Glide, OpenGL or DirectX). Also helpful are options of an automatic analysis of the created elements in terms of errors. The program’s functions can be further developed by means of plug-ins written in the Python language.
