Full Spectrum Warrior 1.0

Full Spectrum Warrior is a tactical action game, created by Pandemic Studios, which is a very realistic simulation of a contemporary battlefield as seen from the US soldiers’ perspective. It is one of few games used to train soldiers or treat post-traumatic stress disorder.

The game is based on a squad consisting of two fireteams: Alpha and Beta. Each of them is equipped with an M4 carabine (the Team Leader), M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (based on the Belgian FN Minimi), M4 carabine with M203 grenade launcher attachment. The player is supposed to complete the assigned tasks. Unlike many action games, the player does not directly control any of the fireteam members: instead, he/she gives orders to hold a position and set a specific zone to cover with fire. The game is challenging and requires a great deal of patience and tactical thinking. Although the storyline is simple, it does not spoil the enjoyment. The graphics also leaves a lot to be desired but, again, it does not really disturb the player.

The interface is quite complex and requires getting used to, especially given the fact that the player commands the squads instead of controlling them. The camerawork isn’t impressive, either. However, this does not change the fact that this is a good game which provides access to a soldier’s real world, instead of some idealized, popcultural world created by games like Call of Duty or Medal of Honor.

The game has been made available as freeware sponsored by the US Army. However, the website of the program or its creators is unavailable.
