Learning geography may be (and often is) a challenge. Fortunately, however, there is a wide range of educational programs which promote learning by doing rather than by studying boring course books and learning countries and their capitals by heart. An excellent example of such a helpful and user-friendly program is Seterra.
It is a relatively small program, which has been developed since it was first published in 1998. It includes more than seventy exercises designed in order to enable the user to learn and revise the material from geography by means of games. The program allows the user to acquire the basic knowledge of countries, capitals, flags and cities on all continents (Africa, Europe, North America, South America, Asia and Australia) by means of infamous contour maps, loved by all geography teachers. The user may also select an exercise adjusted to their individual needs: for instance, if they find it difficult to learn the names of French cities, they can choose an exercise that tests their knowledge on this topic. Also, the program run lists of best results, thus promoting healthy competition.
The program has got a simple, yet elegant interface, which is based on vector graphics. The user quickly finds out how the exercises work and the program boasts a great educational potential. Therefore, it deserves the highest rank, the more so that it is a freeware application addressed to primary school, gymnasium and secondary school students. The program is also available in the Polish version.
