OpenEMR is a free, open source application which is a comprehensive tool for managing the patients’ data in any medical institution. It is ONC-certified (Office of National Coordinator for Health Information Technology) and contains all the options necessary for managing a medical center.
The basic advantage of the program is its universality: the program supports Windows, Linux Mac OS X, and a wide range of other operating systems. The most important functions it offers are: managing the patients’ data (there is a possibility of adjusting this function to the character and range of services the given medical institution is offering), planning the appointments, creating the appointment list, managing several institutions at the same time, informing about the appointment by means of electronic mail and text messages. The appointment calendar allows us to view and sort the visits for a given day. The program also allows the user to collect data regarding medical statistics, medical cases, drug inventory, vaccinations. It also enables us to create or print ready-made application forms and patient ID cards, charts, laboratory documents, procedures, etc. It also facilitates online search for certain dugs and prescription management. It provides assistance in medical accountancy and policy management.
Its interface is well-structured and comfortable. However, OpenEMR has got two drawbacks: lack of the Polish version of the program (although the application is currently being translated into foreign languages), and its professional character which requires the help of an IT specialist during the installation. However, it is still one of the best programs for managing any medical institutions.
