Children education constitutes a great challenge for every adult: from parents, to teachers and psychologists. There are various approaches to this issue but the most effective learning takes place via games and play. And this is the idea behind GCompris – a set of educational games for children aged between 2 and 10.
The program provides children with more than a hundred exercises and this number is constantly increasing as the already existing ones are being developed and improved. It is a freeware program, having the GNU PL license, works on various platforms and can be used by anyone, whether a parent or kindergarten or primary school teachers. The exercises are divided into categories. The “Exploring Computer” section allows the children to find out about how the computer works. Another section is “Algebra” which comprises exercises that teach children numbers, simple mathematics and memorizing. The “Science” category enables children to discover, for instance, how submarines work, and what is water cycle as well as to conduct simple experiments. The “Geography” section contains exercises that teach children how to identify and countries and their capital cities on the map. The “Games” category includes games – mainly classic board games such as chess, Sudoku, etc. The “Reading” category contains games that develop reading skills. Exercises which do not fit any category and grouped together in the “Other” section and these are, for instance, exercises teaching the time, or related to jigsaw puzzles or drawing.
The program interface is very easy o use. In short, GCompris is an excellent educational program that can be of invaluable assistance in teaching kids.
