K-3D is an open source, free program for editing 3D graphics. The application has got a simple interface but a huge potential. At the same time the program is universal and functions on various platforms.
K-3D is based on an open modular code architecture making it possible for the program to be developed according to the user’s requirements. The program supports both GNU and Linux systems, as well as Posix and Windows (32-bit). K-3D has been designed to be a simple but at the same time versatile tool: it is equipped with various tutorials, guiding the user through different aspects of graphics edition. The program is based on the OpenGL rendering engine that allows the user to quickly and effectively build models and preview them. It is also possible to model, animate and create interactions between animations from the program level. Perhaps the most interesting option, however, is the unlimited Undo/Redo function which enables the user to go back an unlimited number of steps in creating a model. The versatile modeling options are complemented with the function of procedural modeling as well as the options of marking the individual fragments of the model. K-3D supports various types of visual geometry, starting from polygons, to NURBS, to the co-called blobby. It has also got a section of ready-made 3D templates to be used in the model. As regards animation, the program enables the user to combine any two fragments of the model and animate them together. It has also got much more other functions which are best discovered for oneself.
The program boasts a user-friendly interface which is excellent for beginner 3D graphic designers, because of the number of tutorials it offers.
