Stellarium constitutes an educational aid for amateur astronomers and allows them to explore the sky as well as a catalogue of several hundred thousand stars by means of a comfortable three-dimensional interface.
Created by a group of volunteer programmers, Stellarium is a versatile, three-dimensional sky atlas, enabling the user to explore (right from the moment the program is installed) a catalogue of six hundred thousand stars with an additional possibility of downloading a catalogue of over two hundred and ten million stars. Also, the program allows the user to browse illustrations of the constellations according to the cultures which discovered them (currently, the program recognizes twelve different culture circles). Besides, Stellarium offers detailed images of nebulas (based on the full Messier Catalogue), as well as a realistic images of the Milky Way and the related planets and their satellites. Exploring the sky may be by means of a close-up or a simulated telescope. Besides, Stellarium also displays meridians and parallels as well as the so-called falling stars, eclipses, and also landscapes to be used for creating stunning panoramas.
Its interface is simple and easy to use. It is certainly recommended as an educational aid, especially for amateur astronomers.
