How can we teach children? Obviously, by games. And this is the main idea behind OmniTux, a freeware open source project whose aim is to create a universal set of educational tools for children.
OmniTux is a universal and versatile tool for educating children. All exercises and games are grouped in categories such as Art, Puzzle, Counting, etc. The purpose of each game is to develop certain skills like abstract reasoning, perspective and spatial thinking, mathematical skills, memory, etc. Thanks to using pleasant graphics and catchy music, the program really supports child’s educational development. There is also a possibility of modifying the existing exercises or creating completely new ones: all of them are written in the form of XML files so there is no need to interfere with the program code. Thanks to using the high definition images in the .jpg and .png formats, as well as .svg vector graphics, the program looks nice on both laptop screens and large computer screens of new generation.
What about its interface? As in all open source programs, it is very well-deigned. Because the user is supposed to be a child, the interface is easy to navigate and it doesn’t matter whether the child can read or is only learning.
