The written word, whether in the form of a book or a digital e-book, accompanies us wherever we go. However, we may have problems in choosing a software that can read books saved in various formats. CoolReader is an open source application for opening and reading such files.
This software based on CSS spreadsheets and XML files allows us to read e-books on desktop computers and laptops as well as on portable devices supporting Windows (only 32-bit), Linux or Android (Google). It is also possible to open it on some elnk portable devices.
Thanks to CoolReader we can open such formats as FB2, TXT, RTF, DOC, TCR, HTML, EPUB, CHM and PDB. The program is constantly being developed and in time new formats will be added to the program’s functions. What might be considered a shortcoming is the limited customizing potential, for instance we are unable to set the margins in the files viewed.
The program’s interface is very comfortable which compensates for its minor shortcomings. Every single option is within reach and we can quickly switch between the files viewed. A great advantage is that the program doesn’t require installation. In order to start CoolReader, we only need to open the archive and unpack the program to a given folder.
