Everyone of us has certainly encountered the problem of organizing our photos. There are plenty of programs used for this purpose but only few of them really stand out from the rest. Such a program is digiKam – an open source and comprehensible application for managing our photo collections.
It is an advanced program that allows us to organize our graphic collections (not only photos) in no time at all. It is based on the user-created albums which are then organized. For those who need some more efficient and precise methods it offers the option of marking the files with tags so that we can quickly find the photos we are looking for, as well as more effectively manage the content of our disk (and this is very important since our files are often scattered all over the hard disk). The program also offers a very efficient and intuitively-designed search manager which quickly finds the given photos. digiKam recognizes and supports all elements of graphic files such as Makernotes, Exif tags, XMP or iptc.
Program’s open architecture using KIPI plug-ins (KDE Image Plugin Interface) allows us to further develop its functions and constantly add new tools. The program is a part of the project aimed at creating a database of universal add-in programs to all graphic applications using KDE. The only shortcoming might be the installer’s size but this is a small price for all the functions the program offers.
