Virtual Floppy Drive 0.8

Virtual Floppy Drive does exactly what its name suggests: it is a virtual floppy drive that can create and mount images of floppy disks. Contrary to what it may seem, it is a useful application that allows us to use some older programs in the Windows environment, which sometimes require floppy disks.

Originally named Virtual Floppy Driver, the application enables us to save images of floppy disks as independent files, and thanks to the complex driver being the program’s core, it is possible to specify whether we want to create and use the following floppy disks: 160KB (5.25"), 180KB (5.25"), 320KB (5.25"), 360KB (5.25"), 640KB (5.25"/3.5"), 720KB (5.25"/3.5"), 820KB (3.5"), 1.2MB (5.25"/3.5"), 1.44MB (3.5"), 1.68MB (3.5"), 1.72MB (3.5"), 2.88MB (3.5"). Of course, it is also possible to mount larger floppy disks as smaller and vice versa. We can also modify the way the program is opened without the need to reinstall the driver. The program offers two basic working modes: FILE and RAM.

The program has got a simple graphical user interface (GUI). However, in order to take a full advantage of its potential, we have to use command lines. The program is equipped with an integrated manager for mounting floppy disk images but this function is unavailable for Windows 2000 and its later versions. This is due to some program’s faults but the author plans to add this function as soon as the problems are solved.
